Hybrid Welding Technology

Increasingly, laser technology is gaining acceptance as a viable production process in manufacturing industries such as ship-building and the production of cars and railway vehicles. From the beginning, KUKA Systems have been developing and implementing innovative and customer-oriented cell concepts for these types of application.
 
In particular, hybrid welding with laser and arc brings many benefits for welding applications involving thick-walled materials (construction steel, aluminium, stainless steel, among others).
 
With the development of the KS HybridTec, KUKA Systems have succeeded in combining the advantages of traditional arc welding and laser beam welding processes. The compact design allows optimum access to all workpieces, including three-dimensional subassemblies.

Main advantages of laser/arc hybrid welding when compared to conventional laser beam welding

  • Use of a filler material makes the process noticeably less dependent on workpiece tolerances. The ability to bridge gaps has been significantly improved.
  • Increased process stability due to the combination of the gas metal-arc and laser beam welding processes.


Main advantages of laser/arc hybrid welding when compared to conventional gas metal-arc welding:

  • Higher process speeds, along with excellent seam quality, ensure increased productivity.
  • The risk of deformation is low due to greatly reduced heat input. Reworking is reduced to a minimum.
