Solutions for cost-optimized process automation in CFRP processing
The Aerospace Solutions division of KUKA Systems at the CFK-Valley Stade Convention
The processing and machining of new composites and carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) are still considered to be a cost driver when manufacturing and working with new material combinations. Automated processes and optimized production sequences are the key to getting out of the cost dilemma. At this year’s CFK-Valley Stade Convention in the “Stadeum”, KUKA Systems will again be presenting solutions for process automation with CFRP workpieces from 15 to 16 June 2010. The emphasis is on the aerospace sector, in which a wide range of technologies for automatic processing, machining, handling and assembly are implemented as stand-alone solutions or integrated into complete, flexible automation lines. Other branches also stand to benefit from the innovations of automation specialist KUKA Systems, such as wind energy system construction and the automotive industry. One of the technological highlights for the aerospace sector is the multifunctional end effector which, mounted on a robot arm, enables stress-free drilling, measurement of the borehole and insertion of a rivet in a single work step. However, the technological repertoire of the Augsburg-based system integrator and automation specialist also includes measurement of workpieces and individual processing steps for documented quality assurance. The automated assembly of CFRP workpieces to form complete, highly-complex structural elements in aircraft construction is currently being tested with international aircraft manufacturers and developed to series readi-ness. The technologies are becoming established not only in the aerospace sector, however, but also in other industries, such as the energy sector, shipbuilding and the automotive industry, and increasingly in CFRP processing.
